Artist's Notes
This painting was created in honor of Justin Hayward—singer, songwriter and guitarist. His music has inspired my artwork for 30 years and, more recently, has enhanced my emotional and physical well-being.
While listening to his music one day (his solo CD "The View From the
Hill", to be exact), I saw a completed painting in my head with eyes of wisdom and caring looking out from a beautiful hillside. I immediately began looking for a clear picture of Justin’s eyes and photographs of French
countrysides. When I found the resources I needed, I was careful to place the eyes within the hills without making them obtrusive—I positioned foliage around them in a way not to hide them, but to truly make them a part of the beautiful trees and flowers of the land. I wanted a European-look, so chose photos of French villas surrounded by many natural and man-made textures. The sky is especially clear and bright, allowing all the deep blues and greens of nature to come forward. The eyes are kind, non-judgmental and gracious—just like the man himself. The painting took approximately 40 hours to complete, and is painted with Holbein and Daniel Smith Watercolors on paper from Austria.

Karen Wheeler & Justin Hayward, November 2002 |
After meeting Justin in March of 2002, I felt compelled to create this piece of art for him. He has given me much over the years, but meeting him in person and actually spending time with him has given me memories that have continued to lift me during dark days and continue to bring me happiness daily.
