Artist's Notes

Woman is complex. Strength, pride and passion are only fragments of her phenomenal structure. My intention in creating this piece is to show how many parts can make a whole.

I started out with a simple grid creating a placement for the puzzle piece layout. The shapes were drawn very free hand without consideration for the final painting. Using a photograph of my friend Glaphre Allen I loosely sketched in her image. I then focused on each puzzle piece and the area of her face that it fell on. I would then create a feature of a woman that possibly had the same darks and lights as my friend’s face. For example, definite areas where lips or eyes are concerned would become partial hats, collars of sweaters, etc.. I also used numerous color formations to complicate the final piece. Each puzzle piece is a small representation in itself, and when the painting is viewed as an entity, Glaphre’s face becomes clear.

I chose Glaphre because of her internal and external beauty and grace and because her friendship lifts my spirit every time I am around her.

The piece is approximate 8 by 10 inches on watercolor paper from Austria and is completed in watercolors from Germany. It took approximately 150 hours from beginning to finalization.
