Artist's Notes

My friend William inspired this painting while he described to me one way to approach meditation. He described imagining that one was on the edge of a lake looking across the water at something very distant, perhaps not recognizable. As he described this mental image I immediately saw this painting in my mind.

The piece is divided into 3 separate areas. The foreground represents the past to me—dark, solid, unable to change because it’s already formed the way it is. It is an area that will never progress and it is complete as it is. One of the rocks is a rose bud, which represents me.

The middle ground is the lake and it represents the present to me. It’s fluid and moving, constantly changing but maintaining consistency at the same time. In the far distance there is an almost unrecognizable image at the other side of the lake. It is a small rose resembling a distant tree. It is I blending from the present to the future, which is the sky full of soft, swirling clouds. The sky is ever changing along with the cloud formation, moving slowly and constant with the slightest breeze. It is the unknown, full of change, light and a type of freedom. Euphoria—
